Dr. P. Ryan is committed to using clinical practice and research to expand the narratives of Black folx and explore the impacts of diversity variables on mental health outcomes. His focus includes improving the lives of veteran and civilian adults dealing with anxiety, social and other life stressors, mood disorders, insomnia, and gender and sexuality issues (which include but are not limited to gender dysphoria, questions around sexual and romantic orientation, and sex addiction).
Dr. P. Ryan’s published research primarily centers same gender loving (SGL) Black male issues, which include but are not limited to the availability of sexually liberating spaces for Black queer men; the impact of racism on sexual identity appraisal; and the impact of hegemony, heteronormativity, and homonegativity on Black SGL male livelihood. In 2022, Dr. P. Ryan published his first book, Internalized Nonnegativity Among Same Gender Loving Black Men. An author, podcaster, speaker, and group facilitator, Dr. P. Ryan has engaged domestic and international audiences in broadening their ideas about Black liberation.

Q + A with Dr. P. Ryan
What is your passion?
Storytelling. Whether it’s in the therapy room, research space, or media sphere, I’m looking to expand narratives and share stories
What is your therapeutic orientation?
To echo most, I would consider myself an integrative clinician. I have a strong foundation (and years of formal supervised training) in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I am currently nationally trained in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-i). Due to the needs of the populations I serve, I often integrate elements of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) into my work.
You’re known as “the DL Doc.” Do you only take clients who have issues with sexual orientation?
Absolutely not! My moniker of “the DL Doc” reflects the humble therapeutic space I provide for clients who may be dealing with issues that would be received as taboo or unwelcome in other environments. If you, as a client, are wrestling with sexual or romantic orientation troubles, this space is for you. However, I have engaged in powerful work with folx across races, genders, sexual orientations, ability levels, health statuses, education levels, socioeconomic statuses, and the like.
Are you taking clients?
Yes! I am happy to declare that PR Psychological Services, LLC is currently accepting clients.
